Montana Mule Deer Numbers Declining
Written by Fish Wildlife & Parks
Officials with the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Department say mule deer numbers are on the decline.

Biologists say a decade or more of drought and winter-like storms that occurred last spring took a toll on mule deer fawns. The decline is cyclical, however, and game managers expect the deer herds to rebound in the next three or four years.

Still, the department says hunters will likely face heavy restrictions on mule deer harvest for the next two years. The restrictions could include limiting some hunts to whitetail or antlered mule deer only.

The Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission is expected to adopt final hunting regulations next month.

Montana Antler Shed Hunting Time Approaching
Written by Bob Sherman

Whitetail Deer Antler ShedEvery year around the first of February I begin to get the itch to get out in the field. The cause of this mid-winter itch is knowing that the time is just around the corner when the elk, deer and moose begin to drop their antlers.

Antler shed hunting is a special time for me. I relish the serenity of days in the field and the thrill of finding a freshly dropped rack. The greatest benefit of living in Montana, for myself, is the opportunity to spend time in the pristine wild places so abundant here. I never take these opportunities for granted. Exploring natural Montana is truly a spiritual experience in my life. I don't want to know a life that doesn't include the ability to recharge my spiritual batteries. Thus I head to the forests and fields each winter to soak up the glory of Montana.

Now, the time is once again upon me. I am bristling with anticipation of the treasures that await me. Tomorrow, I head out for the first time this winter. Did the "hoss buck" that dropped the pictured antler make it through another year? Will I find the full set this time out?

Regardless of the answers, I am blessed to even ponder such questions. Without such questions, life would be much less fulfilling.

Happy shed hunting!
